Towing – General information

If you need to be towed

· Unlock the steering wheel lock so that the car

can be steered.

· Keep in mind the highest legally permis-

sible speed.

· Remember that the brake and power steering

servos do not function with the engine is

switched off! You must exert approximately

five times more pressure on the brake pedal

and steering is considerably harder than usual.

· Drive gently. Keep the towline taut to avoid

unnecessary jerking.

For automatic gearboxes

· The gear selector should be in position N.

· Maximum permitted speed for automatic

gearbox: 80 km/h.

Maximum permitted distance: 80 km

(50 miles).

· Cars equipped with automatic gearboxmust

only be towed facing forward.

· The engine cannot be towed to start (bump

started). See ”Jump starting” on the next page.

To tow start (bump start)

the engine

If you tow start a car with a manual gearbox, the

three-way catalytic converter (TWC) can be

damaged. Cars with automatic gearboxes cannot

be tow started. Use a booster battery if the battery

is discharged.

* The method of opening the cover may vary

depending on the variant.

** Certain models: To be able to screw the

towing eye into place, you must first loosen a

plastic screw in the console for the rear towing

eye. Use the flange of the tool bag to loosen the

plastic screw. Rescrew the plastic screw after

use.

Towing eye

The towing eye is located in the tool kit in the

cargo compartment. You must screw the towing

eye into place before towing. The sockets and

covers for the towing eye are located on the right-

hand side of each bumper.

Remove the cover as follows:

A. Undo the cover* by carefully prising in the

groove with a coin or the like.

B. Screw the towing eye securely into place up

to the flange (C). You can use a wheelbrace.

After use, unscrew the towing eye and refit the

cover.

Towing

NOTE! The towing eye may only be used for

towing on the road, not for salvage after driving

into a ditch or similar. Professional help should

be called for salvage towing.
